Pop Cherry’s play list wide and varied
Tue., Jun 14, 2016
The ultimate for a cover band is a gig at Massey Hall.
That speaks to the prowess of the long-running band Pop Cherry, which returns to Roc ‘N Doc’s this Friday.
“To me, (playing Massey Hall) was probably one of the most memorable nights of my life,” says lead singer/harmonica player Joey Varone. “You realize who has been there – just the acoustics of the room, the feel of the room was unbelievable.”

The group rocks the house with a four-man front line, led by Varone, who channels greats like Jagger, Tyler, Morrison, and Elvis.
“When you’re up there, the material speaks for itself,” he offers. “You’ve got to put that material across in a decent way. And we have a lot of fun. For sure, we rock out.”
Last Saturday’s show at Toronto’s Club 744 spanned The Stones’ It’s Only Rock ‘N Roll, Motown standards like Just My Imagination, The Doors’ Break On Through To The Other Side, and Hot Chocolate’s You Sexy Thing. All songs are done heavy. Perennial showstoppers include Aerosmith’s Walk This Way, Gloria by Them, and INXS’ Never Tear Us Apart. But the group usually goes without a set list.
Varone is the remaining founding member from 1977. His A Team of players includes Robert Chiappetta on lead guitar, Daniel De Clou on guitar, Dave “Tex” Bachelor on bass, and Joey Greco on drums. They’re all credited with background vocals.
Pop Cherry has a loyal following at rooms across the GTA, including Roc’s.
“Yeah, the room is a fun room,” the singer adds. “Basically, in Port Credit it’s a great experience every time we hit the stage. We transfer the energy really well to the people. We put in a long hard set, but it’s fun doing it.”
Come summer, they do a lot of private parties; and they’re attempting to get into more soft-seaters, an upscale theatre-like venue. The band has one CD, Straight Up available on itunes, and is getting ready to release “a bunch of new tunes.”
